Convert Microfilm & Microfiche into Digital Format

ScanWorks has the ability to digitize microfiche and microfilm from their original state into digital format. Our state-of-the-art ScanPro reader from e-Image Data is the key. After a page of fiche or a roll of film is inserted, the reader scans each image, one at a time.
Most of the projects we have undertaken have been able to utilize the automated aspect of this step, whereby the reader automatically advances from one image to the next. Occasionally we do receive projects where the images are too close together or contain non-standard size images, thereby requiring us to manually extract each image, one at a time. That kind of digitization project is tedious and costly, but certainly possible when automation is not an option.
Our reader can accommodate 16mm and 35mm microfilm for digitization. It can also accommodate 2-row, 5-row, and other configurations of microfiche.
One thing we suggest our customers do in advance is determine how they want the converted digital images grouped and labeled. We’ve had projects where 1 page of fiche pertained to a single individual, and so we grouped all of those images together into a multi-page PDF. We’ve also had projects where 1 page of fiche contained 60 individual marriage certificates, and so we created 60 PDFs, 1 per certificate. We’ve had microfilm rolls where several client casefiles were on a roll, and we so digitally separated each client file into a separate PDF.
Our most recent microfilm conversion project was for the Portage County DD. Our most recent microfiche conversion project was for the Portage County Probate Court.

Our customers tell us they love having instantaneous access to their records. They appreciate getting away from outdated technology. And they enjoy peace of mind knowing that their irreplaceable records are permanently preserved.
