Protect Against a Data Security Breach, Part 2

Protect Against a Data Security Breach, Part 2

Here are some further strategies to implement to protect against such a data security breach in your business:

4. Laptops and other portable storage media (thumbdrives, flashdrives, disks, etc) : Develop and enforce a written protocol to govern the transport of these devices outside of the office. Only transfer enough data to the device to enable the out-of-office work to be completed, then delete that data once it is saved over to the office computer or network.

5. Sanitization: Remember that erasing a file from a portable storage device does not make the data permanently irretrievable. Sanitization is the only process that removes information from devices in a way that leaves no residual traces.

6. Retention policy: Determine whether your business is best served by retaining records for only as long as deemed necessary by applicable laws and professional guidelines, or indefinitely. Develop and follow the written protocol that you develop accordingly.
