Proper Paper Storage

Proper Paper Storage

It is important that old papers are stored in dark, cool, relatively dry locations. Maintain steady conditions such as 35% relative humidity and below 72° F in areas where paper is stored.  Avoid storing paper in attics and basements. If basement storage is your only option, avoid storing old papers against the outside walls where moisture can collect. Keep in mind that high humidity can lead to the development of foxing (small brown disfiguring spots in paper) or mold growth. Vigilance is necessary to ensure maintenance of acceptable environmental conditions. To eliminate problems associated with long-term paper storage, have your closed files scanned and archived.
